Our Story

What made us think of Peat?

Our Founder, Hannah, spent 12 years working in whisky and always wondered why no one else used peat in their process out with the whisky guys.

Peat is found underground in rural areas and when cold smoked, it lets off the most unique aroma’s which make whatever it is smoking taste richer, deeper and more complex.

This sparked an idea...

Could she replicate the whisky making process but instead of peat smoking malt, she would smoke tomatoes to create tomato sauces which, when added to dishes, would transform recipes to make them taste richer, deeper and more complex.

Quitting the day job

Hannah thought this was such a great idea that she quit her job and spent a year developing “PEAT’D”, the world’s only range of peat smoked tomato sauces. The team built a micro smokehouse on the outskirts of Glasgow to replicate the whisky making process where George (our Head of Smokehouse!) would cold smoke tomatoes for 16 hours at a time.

We ain’t just a sauce

Launching in Autumn 2024, the range provides home-chefs with a cooking “hack” that made any dish taste richer, deeper and more complex by just twisting the lid and pouring. As a completely versatile sauce, it can transform anything from pastas to lasagnas’ to soups, dips, casseroles or even as a marinade.

Scottish, not Italian, sauce makers

And unlike all the other sauce brands which are rooted in Italian traditions, we have created bold, contemporary and bright jars as a complete contrast (….because we are not Italian, and our sauces are infused with Scottish peat).
